VITRONIC Presents Solutions for Industry 4.0

Automatica 2018: As an integrated part of automation, optical inspection systems ensure increased quality and efficiency

Wiesbaden, April 18, 2018 – VITRONIC, a global leader in industrial machine vision, will present new solutions and applications for the automotive industry at Automatica 2018 in Munich, the industry's leading trade show. Various systems for optical surface inspection will be on display, as well as VITRONIC's VIRO WSI solution, the next generation of weld seam inspection systems. VITRONIC inspection systems detect not only the smallest defects during the production process, but also provide valuable data that can be leveraged for process optimizations. The integration of automation in machine vision technology opens the door to many innovative concepts, such as Smart Factory solutions.

Versatile surface inspection for Industry 4.0

VINSPEC solutions support the inspection of surfaces and are fully automatic, detecting material- and production-induced defects in automotive parts. The advanced internal inspection sensor is a new addition to the VINSPEC family. This sensor is used to inspect interior walls of cylinders that are not easily accessible, and can also capture data for different processing planes across the entire surface.
VITRONIC will also showcase VINSPEC 3D INLINE, the solution for inspecting surfaces and geometric deviations on castings in production cycle. Furthermore a 3D inspection solution for the surfaces of small components, such as bearing blocks in engine blocks will also be presented. These 100% inspections reliably record each defect, which is particularly important for parts that play a key role in safety and reliability.

All inspection results, even data from external inspections, are sent to an integrated database for documentation and archiving purposes. There it is organized, visualized, and analyzed so it can be used effectively. This results in optimized production processes, reduced costs, and consistent quality.

Data supports manual processes and automation

In addition to serving as comprehensive documentation, the data captured by the system also supports cooperation between human and machine. VITRONIC will present an example of such an application at the trade show, highlighting how optical inspection systems can provide information for reworking stations. Defects identified by the system can be displayed there on the basis of different views of the test part, a feature that significantly speeds up reworking.  Also in the field of optical weld seam inspection, VITRONIC systems provide the data basis for automated rework of defective parts by means of specially developed software algorithms. This data serves as the foundation for a complete automation chain.

New inspection solution for electric drives

Another application for VITRONIC solutions is the quality inspection of surfaces and welded seams on batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles. Due to high standards for each part, optical systems for welded seam inspection of battery cells are essential for objectively verifying compliance. VITRONIC will present this application for the first time together with VIRO WSI, the new generation of welded seam inspection sensors. This solution is significantly more compact and can be used in many more applications.
